Can't Get Right: The fall of Jesse Gonzalez

It’s official. Jesse Gonzalez is now done in Dallas.  His tenure as the leading Keeper for FC Dallas’ first team is over as of August 6, 2020… and for good reason. Gonzalez was suspended indefinitely on June 6th, pending an investigation into domestic violence charges which were filed on June 5th with the Frisco Police Department. Reporters with the Dallas Soccer Show, did some digging and were able to obtain this summary from the Frisco Police Department.

Who is Jesse Gonzales?

Recruited by FC Dallas at the age of 16 to start in their academy, Gonzalez was signed to a  Homegrown Player (HGP) contract on March 25, 2013, making him the 10th homegrown signing in club history.

After being loaned to USL affiliates, Gonzalez would emerge to start as keeper for FC Dallas towards the end of the 2015 season, starting the club's final 11 regular-season matches as well as four playoff matches. Internationally, he was eligible to represent  both Mexico and the United States, having been born and raised in the US to Mexican parents. He played for Mexico national youth teams, including as the Mexico under-20 starting goalkeeper at the 2015 CONCACAF U-20 Championship and the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

On June 29, 2017, U.S. Soccer confirmed that Gonzalez's one-time switch had been approved by FIFA, and moving forward he would represent the United States at the international level. Just the beginning of a series of bad decisions.  While it was clear initially that he would not be reinstated until the police investigation into the allegations of domestic violence was complete, yesterday FC Dallas officially parted way with him:

The criminal investigation of the incident has not yet been concluded, but Jesse’s time here has. The last time FCD had an issue of Domestic violence go public was 2012 when then 2012/2013 when then-FC Dallas President Doug Quinn was accused of assaulting his wife in a New York hotel. I guess he’s still on indefinite leave of absence. Either way, I’ll say it one time for the folks in the back.. There’s no room in Dallas for wife beaters.
